Strengthen the Foundation

Increase the number of Black staff, faculty, and trustees through recruitment and

retention.

What we’re trying to achieve

  • We will hire more Black faculty and staff, and ensure that the community we have now continues to be supported and valued by the College.
  • We will improve our ongoing relationships with Black Beloit alumni.
  • We will build a more diverse Board of Trustees.

How we’ll make it happen

  • We’ll review and optimize every aspect of our hiring and employment process (search, advertising, and interviewing) to improve the diversity of our applicant pool.
  • We’ll enhance on-boarding and mentoring programs for new and continuing employees.
  • We’ll continue to strengthen practices that enhance equitable employee searches.
  • We’ll strengthen efforts to build direct connections with Beloit’s Black alumni.
  • We’ll implement increasingly effective recruitment and retention practices for Black trustees.

Some statistics we’ll look at to measure success

  • Increased number of Black candidates in searches
  • Increase in number of Black professors
  • Higher percentage of Black staff
  • More Black trustees serving on our board

Grow the Community

Build on our ongoing commitment to enroll and retain domestic Black students.

What we’re trying to achieve

  • We will increase our enrollment of Black students.
  • We will improve retention by ensuring that our Black students feel seen and supported and have a strong sense of belonging as they continue and complete their Beloit education.

How we’ll make it happen

  • We will broaden our outreach to diverse communities of prospective students, and provide clear, accurate information about the resources and support that Black students have at Beloit.
  • We will strengthen our support for Beloit’s community of Black students by various means, including building more connections between our Black alumni and current students.
  • We will ensure that our Black students are empowered to speak up and advocate for themselves, allowing us to identify where we can do more.

Some statistics we’ll look at to measure success

  • Increase in number of Black students in our applicant pool
  • Increase in the percentage of Black students in our first year class
  • Higher percentage of Black students in total student population
  • Greater number of Black students retained from first to sophomore year
  • Black students having a greater sense of connection and belonging at Beloit

Spread Knowledge

Continue to ensure students engage with issues of race, sex, power, privilege, anti-racism, and anti-blackness across the college.

What we’re trying to achieve

  • We will add courses and learning experiences to ensure that issues of race, sex, power, privilege, anti-racism, and anti-blackness are part of every Beloit student’s education.
  • We will work with faculty, staff, and student leaders to center these issues in extracurricular experiences and student organizations.

How we’ll make it happen

  • We’ll provide anti-racist training to student leaders: residential assistants, organization officers, tutors, etc.
  • We’ll continue to offer the anti-racist Advanced Mentoring Program (AMP) sessions for all first-year students
  • We’ll expand our current programming that provides curricular support for anti-racist work
  • Each Career Channel is embedding anti-racist approaches and dialogue into their work.

Some statistics we’ll look at to measure success

  • Increase in the percentage of students who complete coursework that centers these issues
  • Increase in the number of training sessions across the Beloit campus for students
  • A larger number of educational opportunities engaging these issues

Share a Common Language

Continue to ensure faculty, staff, and trustees engage with issues of race, sex, power, privilege, anti-racism, and anti-blackness.

What we’re trying to achieve

  • We will ensure that Beloit faculty, staff, and trustees participate in educational and training opportunities to engage with issues of race, power, sex, privilege, anti-racism and anti-blackness.

How we’ll make it happen

  • We’ll create more opportunities for education and training, and continue to update and improve the opportunities that exist already.
  • We’ll review and refine our hiring and on-boarding processes to center these training opportunities.

Some statistics we’ll look at to measure success

  • Greater number of education and training opportunities for faculty
  • Greater number of education and training opportunities for staff
  • Greater number of education and training opportunities for trustees
  • Increase in percentage of Beloit faculty who attend education and training sessions
  • Increase in percentage of Beloit staff who attend education and training sessions
  • Increase in percentage of Beloit trustees who attend education and training sessions

Create Inclusive Spaces 

Expand safe, inclusive spaces for Black students— residentially, socially, and academically.

What we’re trying to achieve

  • We will expand the availability of and satisfaction with inclusive residential, social, and academic spaces on Beloit’s campus.

How we’ll make it happen

  • We are creating spaces designed to provide our Black students with a sense of belonging and community on a welcoming and safe campus.
  • We’ll create an anti-racist and inclusive plan for whole campus space use, including residential spaces

Some statistics we’ll look at to measure success

  • Increase in number of inclusive spaces available on campus
  • Higher percentage of Black students who are satisfied with spaces on campus

Progress so far

Resist Injustice

Ensure an effective and efficient process to address biased, racist, and discriminatory acts that include accountability measures and restorative justice practices.

What we’re trying to achieve

  • We will improve the current policies while centering the student experience.
  • We will ensure our processes for handling hate acts, hate crimes, and bias incidents are clear, effective, and efficient.
  • We will continue to imbed restorative justice approaches into our policies and procedures.

How we’ll make it happen

  • We will ensure our policies are easy to access on the Beloit website.
  • We will generate reports in aggregate.
  • We will expand the pool of trained biased incident responders.
  • We will create continued opportunities for ongoing restorative justice training for biased incident responders and the campus community.

Some statistics we’ll look at to measure success

  • Increase in student, faculty, and staff awareness of the Anti-hate / Bias Incident policy
  • Decrease in percentage of reported incidents
